UFCW Local 1428 Food members:  Negotiations with your companies continued this week, we met on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with additional dates scheduled for next week as well.

While we did make some progress on language issues this week numerous big issues are still outstanding, health and welfare, pension and wages.

As well as additional language issues that would affect your working conditions, hours and take home pay.

Your union knows that if you don’t show up for work everyday your company doesn’t make any money.

You deserve a fair contract.

There are several easy ways you can show your support for a fair contract:

Wear your March 2011 button.

Join your Union Rep at the next “tabling” event.  Contact your Rep. to find out the date,
time and location of the next “tabling” and then join them.

Attend the regularly scheduled quarterly General Membership meeting,
Thursday, April 14^th at 7pm in your Union Hall.

After more than 20 days of negotiating sessions, on Tuesday March 29, the 3 Companies finally presented their proposal. The changes proposed would devastate many of your contractual protections and surely lower your take home pay.

Management continues to blame their need to strip the contract of many of its protections on their decrease in market share. Unfortunately they refuse to recognize their role in the changing patterns of Southern California shoppers. These include the strike/lockout; their refusal to open stores in the inner city food deserts and the selling of existing locations to non-union competition.

We have negotiations scheduled for the remainder of this week and the next 2 weeks. If management’s attitude does not significantly change, we may need to ask for a strike vote. Your militancy expressed through a vote may be the only action management understands.

Our goal is to continue negotiating to avoid this option. However, if we need your support to achieve the best possible contract, we know we can count on it.

Finally, please do not listen to or repeat rumors! If you hear something and don’t know the answer the best place to get that answer is from your Union Representative.
