The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), the union
representing Southern California grocery workers, has reached
a tentative contract agreement with Stater Bros markets, one
of the largest grocery chains in the region.
The tentative agreement is the first since the contracts
negotiated at the conclusion of the contentious 2003-2004
grocery worker strike, which lasted 141 days.
Details of the agreement are embargoed until union members
have had a chance to vote to accept or reject the agreement.
Stater Bros employs over 16,000 workers and has had markets in
Southern California since 1936. It is nearly tied with the
Albertsons chain as the third largest chain in Southern
California, after Ralphs and Vons. The United Food
andCommercial Workers represents over 70,000 Southern
California grocery workers in nearly 1,000 markets.
The agreement is likely to set the precedent for upcoming
negotiations with the other union market chains in the region,
such as Albertsons, Ralphs, Vons and other smaller chains.
Stater Bros employees represented by the UFCW will begin
voting on the contract next week, with final balloting
concluding Wednesday, January 17th.
