Executive Secretary Za Zette Scott joined the union’s staff in 2003 and soon discovered that she had found a second home and family. Having been raised by parents who worked union at Northrop Aircraft and a grandfather who retired from Kaiser Steel with a very healthy pension; Scott always knew what working union truly meant. It seemed a natural fit when Scott landed at Local 1428.
After only a few months at Local 1428, Scott was soon learning what it meant to fight for workers rights on the job. Scott was assigned the task of training picket captains for the inevitable Grocery Strike/Lock-Out of 2003-2004. Being a part of the staff and the membership during that tumultuous time was one of the most essential experiences for Scott.
Scott says that during the Strike/Lock-Out she was in awe of the resolve and courage of all the UFCW members. She considers them, to this day, to be true heroes of the Labor Movement because they set the gold standard for solidarity and unity.
Scott is active in the breast cancer support community as a result of her own diagnosis with the disease in 2006. She is a certified Breast Health Advocate and Support Group Facilitator. After several surgeries and 31 rounds of radiation treatment, Scott was declared cancer-free. However, in 2009 Scott underwent further surgery to decrease the chances of the cancer returning.
Scott is a published writer. Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Cancer Book contains an essay by Scott titled “The Change.” It humorously tells of her experiences with chemo-induced menopause.
Scott never misses an opportunity to work in the community to strengthen the Labor Movement. She is the current Program Director of the Giving Back Food Pantry.
She has lived in Upland with her family for 15 years.
In her spare time, Scott enjoys writing, reading, watching basketball (she is an avid Lakers fan) and listening to her 16 year old son, Joseph, play bass.
