UFCW 1428 Organizing Director Lily Flores was born into a union family. Her great-grandfather was a member of the United Mine Workers. Her grandfather was a union member when he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Her mother was in the UFCW and her father was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. While growing up in Yuma, Ariz., Flores learned about the differences that union pay and benefits made for a family with eight children.
Flores began her career in 1991 at Smith’s Food and Drug, which was non-union at the time. Soon after she began, she joined with UFCW Local 99, Arizona, to help organize the store.
After the effort succeeded, Flores became a steward and a Special Project Union Representative (SPUR).
In 2002, she accepted a position with UFCW Region 8 as assistant to the director, and in June 2009 Flores joined the staff of UFCW 1428 as organizing director.
